# Positive Pay vs RealPayee

> Positive Pay is a bank service that matches the checks (and with ACH Positive Pay, the debits) presented against your account to what you authorized, so altered, counterfeit or unexpected items get flagged. It does not help when you are tricked into sending money to a fraudster's account, because that payment is one you authorized. RealPayee targets that gap. Most teams should use both.

## What Positive Pay is

Positive Pay is a treasury service offered by banks. You send the bank a file of checks you issued; the bank compares each presented check (number, amount and, with payee Positive Pay, payee name) and asks you to decide on exceptions. ACH Positive Pay and ACH debit blocks apply similar rules to incoming debits.

We cover the variants in detail in [What is positive pay?](https://realpayee.com/blog/what-is-positive-pay).

## Positive Pay vs RealPayee at a glance

| | Positive Pay | RealPayee |
| --- | --- | --- |
| What it stops | Altered, counterfeit or unexpected checks and unauthorized debits | Fake bank-detail changes and fake payment requests |
| Where it sits | At your bank, on items presented against your account | In your ERP or AP tool, before the payment is released |
| Stops a fraudulent vendor bank change | No | Yes, held until the known contact confirms |
| Stops an authorized wire to a fraudster | No | Yes, if above your hold threshold |
| Evidence | Exception decisions at the bank | Audit record of who confirmed, how and when, for auditors and cyber insurers |
| Cost | Bank fee (varies by bank) | Starter $250/month, Growth from $750/month, Enterprise custom |

## Where Positive Pay wins

- **Stops check fraud**, which AFP's 2026 survey found affects 58% of organizations.
- **Stops unauthorized ACH debits** when ACH Positive Pay or debit filters are on.
- **Run by your bank** at low cost, with no change to your AP workflow beyond the issue file.

## Where RealPayee wins

- **It covers outgoing payments you were tricked into authorizing**, which Positive Pay by design does not question.
- **It verifies the bank-detail change itself**, before the first payment to the new account.
- **It covers executive and wire requests**, including deepfake calls.

## When to choose which

### Choose Positive Pay if

- You still issue checks or allow ACH debits against operating accounts. You should have Positive Pay regardless.

### Choose RealPayee if

- Your exposure is fake vendor bank changes, BEC and executive impersonation, which Positive Pay does not address.
- You want to see it on your own flow first: [book a demo](https://realpayee.com/demo).

## Can you use both?

Yes, and they should be. Positive Pay protects what comes in against your account; RealPayee protects what you send out. They address different fraud types.

## Frequently asked questions

### Does Positive Pay stop vendor impersonation fraud?

No. In vendor impersonation you authorize the payment yourself, to an account the fraudster supplied. Positive Pay matches items against what you authorized, so it has nothing to flag. See [Does positive pay stop vendor impersonation?](https://realpayee.com/answers/does-positive-pay-stop-vendor-impersonation).

### Does payee Positive Pay help with ACH or wire fraud?

Payee Positive Pay checks the payee name on checks. It does not check outgoing ACH credits or wires you send.

### Should I still use Positive Pay if I use RealPayee?

Yes. They cover different risks. Check fraud remains the most common payment fraud type in AFP surveys.
